Monkeys came in through roof. Very comfortable. Sit by river and watch crocodiles tear apart a goat or lamb. If you leave the dining room after dark an attendant with a gun takes you back to your room. NAROBI ANIMAL PARK TSAVO PARK ELEPHANT DAMAGE One elephant can wipe out a village. SALT LICK TREETOP HOTEL AM tea in room then game drive. Come back for breakfast. A whistle signaled you to go to a vehicle to see the animals. VW busses with pop-up tops. No one leaves the bus. Birds eat from your table. Birds perch on side of sugar bowl. --------------- NORTHERN KENYA Reticulated Giraffes. 5,000 feet elevation. Looked like Colorado. Cool nights like Colorado. This was their winter. Summer much hotter. Group of elephants playing in the river with the babies. Our driver was Mohammed Ali. Never stare at baboons or they will attack. Treetops waterhole built on stilts. You could watch the animals at night. Princess Elizabeth stayed there. ---------------- MOUNT KENYA SAFARI CLUB Built by William Holden Very plush. Roads were very good. -------------- MASA MARA Crossed the great Rift Valley Giraffes everywhere. We couldn't go to Tanzania. We saw the migration of wildebeasts. We saw a dark rock wall? No, it was a line of wildebeasts. Very dumb like bison. Migrate like reindeer in Alaska. Many are killed on the trip by crocodiles and lions. Storks, hyenas, and wild dogs. Dogs run in packs. Eat as they run. Lions are afraid of the Massai and water buffalo. Hot air balloon rides available. One balloon was drug by the wind. Saw cheetahs with their babies. Saw a boa constrictor that had eaten a wildebeast. Laid there for a month. Much of area was dried up lake beds. Natives burned the forest. Massai natives are very tall. Their wealth is their cattle. Grow gourds to hold blood, milk, and urine. Houses made of cow manure. Ladies used manure on heads. Babies have ears pierced. Mother's stretch the child's ear loops with film canisters and disks. Massai are good hunters. Now it's against the law to kill a lion. Young men used to have to kill a lion. Cattle rustlers were a problem. We saw only three rhinocerous. A lion was too close to get a picture. Natives walked thirty miles to see a museum. Transportation was pickup trucks. AMBROSELI PRESERVE Across from Mount Kilamanjaro. Elephants destroying the trees. No electricity at night. Hot water in room on demand. Stayed in Massai-type house built of concrete. Curved doorway entry to house. Cattle brought into house area at night. Children heard the cattle. Children covered with flies. Eyes matted shut by the flies. Flies and cowdung everywhere. Flies got between the suitcases in the van. Massai are beautiful people all wear red. If you are accused of murder it costs 100 cattle. Murder outside the tribe doesn't count. MOMBASA Indian Ocean Warehouses full of ivory. Trading center for century. Railroad Mombasa to Nairobi. Newspaper each day "The Nation." A man illegally charged a toll for a bridge. They bit him to death by evening. MOMBASA East Indians are the merchants.
